I should first start off by saying that I donated a sum of money to No on Prop 8 last week. I should have done it sooner. If you can't donate, but live in California, you can also donate your time by volunteering at a local phone bank.
Here is what you need to know:
What is Prop 8?
Dispelling the lies: Fact vs. Fiction
Why Vote No On 8?
Who Opposes Prop 8? (We're talking hella people and organizations!)
My Opinion:
Prop 8 discriminates based on sexual orientation. Just as interracial marriage laws were defeated in the past based on not discriminating against a group, gays and lesbians must not be discriminated against when it comes to the basic right of marriage.
Even when you think of this purely from an economics standpoint, Gay Marriage will help the California Economy. Think of all the new fabulous weddings you'll get to attend or plan. In all seriousness, this will help boost the economy by stimulating spending.
Just Listen to Ellen for a moment, why don't you?

Where does the sexual deviance stop?
This is about selfish sexual perversion. Can we love each other without sex? You can not NORMALIZE sexual perversion.
Use your energy to help people who are in need. Not those who would lead you into their perversions....
You should be able to marry anyone? how about your dad? or your sister? Why not? because some things are still wrong. Marriage still means a man and a woman committing to creating a family, providing those kids with mother and father's influences.
Dwayne - where do you see a definition of marriage that states "Marriage still means a man and a woman committing to creating a family, providing those kids with mother and father's influences."?? Can elderly people get married? What about infertile couples? Or are those folks "allowed" simply because being with and caring for that other person for a lifetime is rewarding in itself?
wow...and david, where did you get the idea that same-sex marriage is about any kind sexual perversion?? i tend to think that some of the biggest 'deviants' and 'perverts' out there are all those priests we've heard so much about... my people certainly aren't looking at little kids as sex objects, that's for sure!
Proposition 8 is more about same sex marriage its about protecting our sons and daughters from growing up in a world that teaches that being gay or lesbian is just as normal as being strait. I don't want my sons and daughters being taught as young as five years old in school that it is okay to marry someone of their same sex. It is about the principle of religion. And protecting what God has set up as the correct way to replenish the earth. It is between marriage between a Man and a Woman. God set Adam and Eve on earth to have their posterity fill the whole earth. It goes contrary to the laws set up by God himself. I have nothing against gay or lesbian individuals. I believe they can live their life how they please. I am against the teachings that go against the teachings of God. And we must fight to protect God's holy ordinance of Marriage between one man and one woman.
David - There are PLENTY of same sex couples... and heterosexual couple that don't have sex. Marriage and sex are two different things. This is something I care about and help people in multiple ways.
Dwayne - Don't throw the 'Anyone' card out. This is clearly not what this about. It's not about marrying a dog, a cat, or your sister. And Hell, if one wanted to do so... why should it matter to YOU?
Oh... and Julie, You Rock.
And to 'Anonymous'... so basically what you're saying is you want to teach your kids to be ignorant?
There is a separation between church and state. If you want to teach your kids religion, take them to a parochial school. Better yet... let THEM decide.
P.S. - I'm pretty sure they're gonna find out about Gay Marriage in some fashion.
And guess what, If you're talking about the TV ads about teaching Gay Marriage in school... you're wrong. Read the Proposition. Thank you very much.
Fiction: Teaching children about same-sex marriage will happen here unless we pass Prop 8.
Fact: Not one word in Prop 8 mentions education, and no child can be forced, against the will of their parents, to be taught anything about health and family issues at school. California law prohibits it, and the Yes on 8 campaign knows they are lying. Sacramento Superior Court Judge Timothy Frawley has already ruled that this claim by Prop 8 proponents is “false and misleading.”
I agree with you in that gay and lesbian individuals should have the same civil rights as married couples, but what I do not agree with is if gay marriage is passes then my religious leaders could get sued for not performing same sex weddings because it would be considered discrimination. This is violating their right of personal belief in their religion and the things their religion teaches. Furthermore you say prop 8 will not have an effect on teaching same sex marriage in school. I disagree completely with you on this issues. I would like you to look up the story of the Massachusetts father who was arrested because he would not leave his daughters school until he was informed when their school would be teaching about same sex marriage so he could remove his daughter when they taught this. The school said they did NOT have to inform him of when this would be taught because it was not topic that needed parental release. That is taking away the right of the parent to teach his child what he believes is right and granting that right to the government. I completely disagree with you that prop 8 will have no effect on teaching my children about same sex marriage.
Okay so what is with these people being concerned that gay marriage is taught in schools. As a former 1st grade teacher and a wife of a teacher, we both know that this will not be the case. Supporters of prop 8 say that teachers will be mandated to teach about gay marriage. What are they talking about? Math, science, and literacy are the core subjects that are taught in the classroom because of all of the testing that is required of our schools. California Teachers are in support of voting NO on prop 8 because they know the truth. I hope people choose, as my husband and I have, to raise their children as tolerant peaceful individuals. What if you couldn't marry the one you love? How insulting. Government is too involved in our citizen's personal lives. And by the way, how is this about "selfish sexual perversion?" Give me a break. I have taught children as young as four and I have seen certain children grow up to be gay. I knew they would be when they were young. Did they choose a life of discrimination? No, this is WHO they are. It is not about choices. THis is about LOVE not about SEX. I agree VOTE NO ON 8!
I think it's fair to say that you're not going to see a line of gays and lesbians in front of their local Catholic churches, hoping to have a church wedding. These are the same places that have outwardly said they don't support that - why would we want that energy around the most important day of our lives? For those who do want to get married in a church, I suspect they've already found an open and welcoming church that would support that.
The church argument is tired - has been for some time. Is the straight couple that heads to Vegas or City Hall any less married because their ceremony wasn't performed in a church?
Marriage has more than one interpretation - I think a lot of you are confusing the Civil Union piece with the Holy Sacrament piece.
oh, and Will - this is now my new favorite blog :)
You rock, too. Big.
I would oppose Prop8.
If you are worried about what your child is learning in school, perhaps you should spend more time with him/her to ensure they are receiving morals and values that you agree with, rather then relying on the public school system to do so.
If you want to protect marriage, start by eliminating the right to divorce.

Prop 8 does not take away any rights. Under California law, “domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections, and benefits” as married spouses. (Family Code § 297.5.) There are NO exceptions. Proposition 8 WILL NOT change this.
